Fifty years ago in 1945, after World War II, electrical contractor, Barney Roth and Joseph Rosen merged their business and professional expertise to found The Barney Roth Company, Inc. in Philadelphia. Their goal was to provide lighting management and
maintenance services to private industry, including both commercial and industrial clients. One of the firm's first suppliers was Westinghouse, which had recently introduced its revolutionary new product, the fluorescent lamp. Marketing the most sophisticated lighting product then available, Westinghouse approached The Barney Roth Company to service the thousands of businesses that would purchase and install this innovative, and efficient lighting source.
In 1948, as the company's business grew, Philadelphia Lighting Maintenance Company was formed as a Division of The Barney Roth Company to offer lighting services to multi-location and chain customers. The new name reflected more clearly the services offered by both companies..
Today, over 50 years later, The Barney Roth Company is still a leader in the lighting management and maintenance field, continuing to deliver quality services and programs for state-of-the-art lighting technology. The initial operation of the 40's currently includes a diversified staff with years of experience in design, engineering, and energy conservation. Bernard Roth, the current President and Chief Operating Officer of the Company, joined the firm in 1954 after completing military service. With a degree in electrical engineering, he helped expand the capabilities of the company. Fod T. Vick, Executive Vice President, joined the company in 1970 with a Master's Degree in Lighting Design and a CLMC Certification.
Working with the management staff is a fleet of 35 service vehicles which meet customer demands in Southern New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania, and Northern Delaware. The company also has broadened its scope of operations to meet the changing needs of today's society.
When manufacturers began to address the issue of energy conservation in the 1970's the company developed the necessary services that the more complex, energy conserving lighting products required. The company renewed its commitment to customer education, keeping its clients abreast of technological innovations and helping them upgrade, repair, or replace products and systems for long-term energy, efficiency, and cost saving benefits.
The firm is now in the vanguard of consulting with businesses that are retrofitting their current lighting to conserve energy. Certified Lighting Management Consultants (CLMC) review options with clients, tailoring lighting system solutions for maximum energy savings and work place productivity and comfort. The Barney Roth Company also holds a leadership role in NALMCO (National Association of Lighting Management Companies) and became the region's first registered contractor ally for the EPA's (Environmental Protection Agency) Green Lights Program, which promotes energy conservation through responsible lighting practices.
In addition, the company has forged an alliance with local utilities to develop viable communication and education programs between the utilities and their customers. Working with the EPA and IES, the staff is helping quantify and qualify industry maintenance standards by participating in a nationwide long-term research project. In the community, The Barney Roth Company's executives meet with local professional groups, such as BOMA (Building Owners' and Managers' Association), BSA (Building Superintendents' Association), Chamber of Commerce and Rotary to update them on trends and technological developments in the lighting field.
